Breastfeeding Welcome

Mothering Magazine had a contest to design a symbol that would serve as "an international symbol for breastfeeding is to increase public awareness of breastfeeding, to provide an alternative to the use of a baby bottle image to designate baby friendly areas in public, and to mark breastfeeding friendly facilities." The symbol (shown at left) has been donated to the public domain, and can be posted anywhere to indicate a breastfeeding-friendly environment.

Meanwhile, New York City is spending $2 million+ in city hospitals to encourage breastfeeding.

Thanks to Belly Tales for pointing out both stories.

This is awesome. I hope it's used. I recently ran into a young mother trying to discreetly breastfeed her newborn while standing in a restroom at the mall. She was almost in tears, and asked why there wasn't at least a chair where she could sit down. I suggested she ask one of the stores if she could use a dressing room for a few minutes, where she'd be a little more comfortable. It’s ridiculously hard to find a place to breastfeed when you’re out and about.

Retailers need to take note of this. I am a mother and I make almost all of the purchasing decisions in my household. A store that promotes a breastfeeding friendly environment would get more of my cash, no question.

Thanks for your comments. I too hope to start seeing this at retail locations in the near future.
